As 2022 draws to a close, it’s a good opportunity to look back at the year that came with exciting wins and praises for architects and designers around the globe. 

From individuals championing affordable housing and sustainability to those advocating for social justice issues within the realms of design and the built environment, the past twelve months featured an excellent group of professionals changing the industry.

Our curated selection highlights some of the most notable award-winning architects and designers from this past year, listed in chronological order.

Rice Design Alliance announces Tropical Space as the 2022 Spotlight Award recipient

“…the Vietnamese firm Tropical Space as the recipient of this year’s Spotlight Award recognizing exceptional architectural talent still in the early stages of their careers. The 11-year-old practice operates out of Ho Chi Minh City and focuses on the rare tropical application of brick as a building material in order to ‘create values of architectural aesthetics and inspiring stories about local sustainability.”

Women in architecture celebrated at the W Awards by the UK’s architectural press

“The Jane Drew Prize for Architecture 2022 has been awarded to British-Iranian architect, educator, and writer Farshid Moussavi. The annual award is given to an architectural designer whose work and activity has raised the profile of women in architecture […] The Ada Louise Huxtable Prize for Contribution to Architecture 2022 has been awarded to the British-Palestinian artist Mona Hatoum, recognizing individuals from the wider architectural industry who have made a significant contribution to the built environment.”

“The American Institute of Architects announced its newest class of Young Architects Awar winners. Twenty-three designers were honored by the organization for their demonstrated ability as leaders and contributions to the built environment while still in the early stages of their professional careers.”

Four women-led projects make up the 2022 Arnold W. Brunner Grant for Architectural Research winners

“The Center for Architecture and AIANY have announced the winning projects for this year’s 2022 Arnold W. Brunner Grant for Architectural Research competition. The four grants are awarded to licensed professionals in their mid-career working on various challenges to the design industry through investigations that will ultimately be applied to the art and science of architectural practice.” This year’s winners are Liz Ogbu and Christine Gaspar, Liz Teston, Jane Lea, and Julia Watson.

MODA is the 2022 RAIC Emerging Practice Award winner

“The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) has named Calgary-based Modern Office of Design + Architecture (MODA) as its 2022 Emerging Practice Award recipient. MODA was first established by University of Calgary graduates Ben Klumper and Dustin Couzens in 2013 and has since gained distinction for its designs across a broad range of practice areas and scales…”

Seven architects and landscape architects awarded the 2022–23 Rome Prize

“Since it was established in 1894, the American Academy in Rome (AAR) is the oldest overseas center for research and independent studies within the arts and humanities. With a list of distinguished winners ranging across eleven disciplines, including architecture, landscape architecture, visual arts, literature, and more, thirty-eight Americans and four Italian artists and scholars were recognized this year.” This year’s Rome Prize winners are Michael Meredith and Hilary Sample of MOS Architects, Jennifer Newsom
and Tom Carruthers of Dream the Combine, Katherine Jenkins and Parker Sutton of Present Practice, and Alexa
Vaughn.

Grafton Architects’ Town House at Kingston University wins the 2022 EU Mies van der Rohe Award

“Following the recent announcements of 40 shortlisted and seven finalist projects, the jury of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture — Mies van der Rohe Award today revealed the final victors of the two 2022 trophies: Town House, the new Grafton Architects-designed academic and arts space at Kingston University, London, was selected as the grand winner of the Architecture Prize, while the Emerging Architecture Prize went to the La Borda cooperative housing project by Lacol in Barcelona.”

Pritzker winner Anne Lacaton selects Arine Aprahamian as her 2023-24 Rolex Protégé

“2021 Pritzker Prize winner Anne Lacaton will mentor Lebanese-Armenian architect and co-founder of MÜLLERAPRAHAMIAN Arine Aprahamian as part of the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. The program is the luxury retailer’s non-profit arm who announced the upcoming cycle’s mentors and their protégés in a ceremony at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.”

“The MacArthur Foundation has announced the recipients of this year’s 2022 MacArthur Grant Fellows. Frequently referred to as the MacArthur ‘Genius Grant,’ the Foundation awards ‘unrestricted fellowships to talented individuals who have shown extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits and a marked capacity for self-direction.’ This year, notable Chicago-based visual artist and architect Amanda Williams is among the 2022 MacArthur grant winners.”

Two emerging architects awarded AIANY’s 2022 Stewardson Keefe LeBrun Travel Grant

“Two emerging architects were recently named as winners of the 2022 Stewardson Keefe LeBrun Travel Grant by the Center for Architecture at the AIA New York (AIANY) […] Tadd Heidgerken and Zui Lig Ng were awarded a combined total of $25,000 for projects that look into the built environment in five different countries as possible guides for solutions to various ascendant challenges in the industry.”

Mithun is named the AIA Architecture Firm Award winner for 2023

“Continuing its annual tradition of honoring America’s top practitioners, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has named Mithun the AIA Architecture Firm Award winner for the year 2023. Mithun was joined by Gold Medal winner Carol Ross Barney in the awards announcement, which mentioned their ability to bring about positive change through a ‘holistic, interdisciplinary pursuit of architecture.'”

Architect Achim Menges wins a 2023 Leibniz Prize for his computational design research

“University of Stuttgart professor Achim Menges has been named among the winners of the 2023 Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize by the German Research Foundation (DFG) for his interdisciplinary research into computational design and the application of robotic manufacturing methods in construction that have both helped propel the industry toward a resource-efficient and sustainable future.”
